University Archives

The University Archives preserve Heidelberg University’s historical holdings dating back to the Middle Ages and continue to take over selected records that are no longer required for current tasks in administration, research, and teaching.

These records also provide a basis for historically researching the origin and transformation of the collections as well as the history of individual objects. The archival holdings can be searched via the online catalogue of the University Archives. In addition, selected records have been digitized and are digitally accessible via the University Library.

University Library

Among other things, the Historical Collection of Heidelberg University Library also includes an extensive collection of the literary estates of former professors and academic staff. These estates partly contain important information on the genesis of individual collections and collection components, as well as on individual objects.

Information on the estates can be found on the University Library website and in the Kalliope union catalogue, in which the estates have for the most part been catalogued.

Archives and Databases of the Institutes

In addition to the University Archives, many institutes and collections maintain their own archives, which contain further information on objects, their provenance, and the history of the collection. Some institutes also maintain their own databases, in which the collected objects are recorded with discipline-specific information. The databases and references to the institute archives can in part be found on the pages of the respective collections and are listed again here.
