Faculty of Mathematics and Computer Science Collection of Mathematical Models

Das Bild zeigt ein mathematisches Modell, ein sogenanntes hyperbolisches Paraboloid mit Horizontalschnitten

The collection comprises plaster and polyhedron model collections for the spatial representation of mathematical formulas and theoretical concepts

The collection was founded at the beginning of the 20th century and today comprises just under 80 objects: mathematical models, a bronze plaque from 1914 honoring the mathematician Leo Königsberger, who also made important contributions to establishing this collection, and an oil painting of the mathematician Heinrich Liebmann from 1932. The mathematical models were used to represent abstract mathematical formulas and theoretical concepts spatially, making them more comprehensible. It received a significant addition in 1930/31 through the donation of Max Brückner’s polyhedron model collection, of which only a few survive. After the Second World War, plaster models gradually lost their role in teaching and were primarily exhibited. Since 2016, the holdings have been systematically cataloged and digitized, making them accessible again for research and teaching.
