Institute of Physiology and Pathophysiology Collection of Historical Instruments

The Physiological Collection of Heidelberg University dates back to the mid-19th century
In 1852, the director and Professor of Anatomy and Physiology, Friedrich Arnold, was commissioned to establish a physiological cabinet with a laboratory. Numerous scientific instruments were produced there, acquired from specialized instrument makers, and used directly in the laboratory, particularly from the time of the first holder of the Chair of Physiology, Hermann von Helmholtz. In 1974, when the institute moved to Neuenheimer Feld, several objects were selected that were thought to be associated with the “great names” in the institute’s history. Today, the collection comprises around 100 instruments from the 19th and 20th centuries for physiological research, as well as more than 90 scientific films and other teaching materials. A selection is now exhibited at the institute and documents the development of experimental physiology in Heidelberg.
