The collection of the Seminar for Prehistory and Early History comprises objects from the Palaeolithic to Early Medieval finds, as well as Palaeolithic and Nordic stone tools.

The core of the collection of the Seminar for Prehistory and Early History is formed by a permanent loan from the Von-Portheim-Stiftung, made available to the institute for teaching purposes. This collection in turn consists of several private collections (the Verworn Collection and the Gutmann Collection). These extensive holdings were assembled at the end of the 19th century and in the first decades of the 20th century through purchases and excavations. In 1950, they were expanded by the Schoetensack Collection with Palaeolithic finds.
